Walnut Slab Crotch Desk
This is 3 years late but wanted to get it out, to Honor the Memory of Ted Alexander. Ted was a good man in this Woodworking Community, And it was an Honor to know and meet him. We had many late night hangouts, and lots of laughs. This Desk is a Walnut Crotch Slab he gave me several years back, and after his death, I never had the heart to finished it, until now. Better late then next Brother, Godspeed

    There is no such thing as a cheap hobby. You start off with a few bits and pieces and very soon you need to add more paraphernalia. Setting up including consumables has cost me more than 2000 dollars and more. Then you begin to get a little bit serious and you realise your quality and pen finish needs to improve if you want to sell some pens. (To help cover some of the costs) Warning I used to keep a spreadsheet of all my expenses. That's how I realised how much the hobby was costing me. I soon got rid of the spreadsheet. Now nobody knows how much pen turning is costing me. I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day (I quit years ago thank goodness) I think smoking was a far cheaper hobby. You will need or want it makes no difference. A decent hobby lathe a decent set of wood lathe chisel set an fine oil stone, you have to keep your chisels sharp A pedestal drill A mandrel preferably with a mandrel saver. a pen press A pen blank drill press a band saw a sanding machine An extractor system Extra lights installed to better see what you are doing A fan Face shield, mask. (After installing an extractor I now do not need a mask but I do have one Drills and bushes to suit a least half a dozen kits glues epoxy and CA Rubber gloves. ( I was forever picking glue off my fingers. various sanding sheets Micro polishing pads pen kits I always buy packs of ten of each pen type. extraction pin set clothes A vacuum to keep the workshop clean and tidy Drawers to store all parts in. I made three sets of drawers wood and acrylic blanks (If you buy 50 random acrylic blanks from China the price is reasonable) cases to put pens in to sell them A display case That should be enough to get you started. Have fun. You are going to be so busy.

    I asked dad to make something for me using hairpin legs so many times so this is a very fitting tribute for him! Thanks so much for caring about my dad and for making such a beautiful item out of wood he gave you. This video made me cry an awful lot. ❤️

      Your Dad was a good man, and Friend. After his passing I could not bring myself to finish it, but then I thought what he would say to me, “ don’t waste that wood I gave you, go make something” lol, miss those late night chats with him and others. Honored to call him a friend.

    Unlike traditional varnishes, it is best to apply Halcyon on the thicker side. We recommend applying Halcyon around 4-6 mils wet. When applying the varnish, try not to overbrush the product otherwise the coating may be too thin causing the brush strokes to show. If you have any other questions, please reach out to our tech team. They would be happy to assist!

    Other tips are all correct… better sanding.. foam brush etc but why brush at all? Invest a few bucks in a decent spray rig (make sure it can handle all finish types latex and solvent). Finally if you’re looking for A glass-smooth finish you may just need to build more coats and then sand back flat with wet/dry paper 400-600-1200 etc , a flat hard rubber and a lot of time and patience. Weeks not days Good luck.

  • @jthomas1878
    @jthomas1878 6 месяцев назад

    Too much surface area. Your finish is drying while you’re brushing it. Thin it down, try again.

  • @Booner5055
    @Booner5055 6 месяцев назад

    Go to an auto parts store and buy a paint cup gun. Hook it up to your compressor and spray the finish, let dry, sand and repeat until you have a smooth coat and appropriate thickness. Wear a respirator. No brush marks

  • @belletire25
    @belletire25 6 месяцев назад

    Give the wood a good sand to start getting rid of the natural grooves, then use a foam roller to apply your coats. That or a stain brush, which is basically just a sponge on a stick

    • @SterlingsWoodcrafts

      Humming Bird do not nest, we just call it that because it is tiny and cute, and looks the size of a hummingbird, it’s more for inside/Cover porch Deco, and skill building on the Lathe. Thanks so much for watching though, appreciate the question and support
